Album Notes
On her debut solo EP, singer/songwriter/poet, Lulu Gordon, seduces you with her breathy intimate vocal style, evocative lyrics, and rich jazz melodies (with a Parisian / Bossa / Hawaiian twist), alluringly brought to life by all-star backup musicians. You’ll be inspired to fall in love – again.
Lulu grew up in Hawaii, listening to her parent’s jazz records and then falling in love with Hawaiian music. Her lyrical journey began with the unexpected birthday gift of a gorgeous Martin guitar. It was a pivotal moment. The poems and lyrics tumbled out, even before she could play that beautiful guitar, culminating in Love and Love Lost, a book of love poems and song lyrics. “These songs and poems are soulful and bluesy, full of humor and hope. With perfect pitch and witty rhymes, Gordon’s lyrics have the buoyancy to ferry us across the choppiest waterways of our hearts” as reviewed by Prartho Sereno, Marin Poet Laureate and prize winning author of Causing a Stir and Call from Paris.
As a hopeful romantic, she has passionately pursued her singing, songwriting, and poetry. With the encouragement of gifted singer and vocal coach, Sharon Boucher, Lulu decided she was ready to share her music. The result is quite wonderful. You can hear the poetry in her evocative, wistful lyrics. Her vocal style – breathy and ethereal – makes for intimate story-telling. Revealing her joy, hurt, longing and hope, she invites you along for the journey.
Her melodies are lush and jazzy, beautifully arranged, produced and engineered with care by Joel Jaffe, whose production and engineering work includes Grammy-nominated albums and sessions with Ringo Starr, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Manzarek Rogers Band, Flamin Groovies, Liz Kennedy. Joel also lends his musical talents, playing soulful lead on guitar, pedal steel and ukulele. Eamonn Flynn, (The Commitments, Zigaboo Modelest among others), is brilliant on piano and synth creating some gorgeous and memorable melody riffs. Rounding out the sound is talented bassist, Marc Levine (Barry Manilow, Bette Midler, Liz Kennedy); superb session drummer Billy Johnson and perfect blending by back-up vocalist Omega Rae.
You will want to hear these songs over and over.
